Chur is the capital of the Swiss canton of Graubünden, in the east of the country. With around 40,000 inhabitants, it is Switzerland’s oldest city, with a history stretching back more than 5,000 years.
Chur is an important transport hub for both rail and road traffic, providing a central connection to various parts of the canton and beyond.
Chur’s old town is characterised by well-preserved historic buildings and narrow streets. Notable sights include Chur Cathedral, the Rätisches Museum and numerous art galleries.
The area around Chur offers beautiful natural scenery, including the Alps and the Rhaetian Railway landscape, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chur is also a cultural centre with a lively theatre and music scene. Its location makes it a popular starting point for hiking, skiing and mountain biking in the nearby mountains.
Graubünden is Switzerland’s largest canton and lies in the east of the country. It borders Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein and covers an area of approximately 7,105 square kilometres. Its capital is Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city. Graubünden is known for its impressive mountain scenery, including the Engadin, the Rhine Valley and numerous Alpine passes.
The canton is characterised by considerable linguistic and cultural diversity. Three of Switzerland’s national languages are spoken here: German, Italian and Romansh. These languages reflect the region’s historical and cultural diversity.
Graubünden is also rich in natural resources and is a popular tourist destination, particularly for winter sports and Alpine holidays, with well-known ski resorts such as Davos and St. Moritz. Alongside tourism, agriculture, forestry and the service sector play important roles in the canton’s economy.
Its geographical location and relative isolation have historically shaped Graubünden’s independent and varied development. Today, the canton is known for its natural beauty, cultural diversity and historical significance.
